One of my favorite pastimes is reading, usually about literary travel but lately, on the exciting genre of creative narrative nonfiction, in which the author is also a character in the story. This is where I stumbled across Eating Dirt by Charlotte Gill, a literary journey that follows tree planters through a year on the job in Northern British Columbia and other remote forests in Canada. During the course of her seventeen years as a tree planter, one of the dirtiest jobs left on earth, Charlotte planted over 1,000,000 trees

Trees play an important part in maintaining a healthy environment. Planting trees is considered one of the least expensive, most effective means of drawing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as one tree absorbs carbon dioxide at the rate of 48 pounds per year. Currently, carbon sequestration by plants offset 16.2% of total U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation and energy sectors*.

Luckily, you don’t have to get down and dirty like Charlotte did, because for every customer who participates in an Earth Save Program, SFE Energy will work with American Forests to plant a tree on your behalf. Since forming our partnership in 2014, American Forests has planted over 150,000 trees on behalf of our Earth Save customers.
