Texas-New Mexico Power: Power Outages | Texas-New Mexico Power

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the flow of electric power to over 26 million Texas customers, ensuring that the electricity supply meets the demand across most of the state.

When the electricity supply from all available power generation plants, wind farms, and other sources becomes insufficient to meet customer demand, ERCOT initiates emergency operations. During such power emergencies, if the electric supply cannot meet consumer demand and all other operational tools have been exhausted, the demand for electricity must be reduced to prevent uncontrolled blackouts. As a last resort, ERCOT instructs electric utilities to implement controlled customer outages to reduce the demand on the ERCOT grid. This process is known as “load shedding” and continues until ERCOT resolves the power emergency.*
